KRA eTIMS and POS Systems in Kenya: What Owners Need

By Zeni POS Team · 10 min read

Why electronic tax invoices belong on the till, how OSCU works, and how Zeni POS uses DigiTax.

KRA eTIMS is Kenya’s electronic tax invoicing system. A till slip that is not fiscalized is increasingly useless to a business customer who needs a deductible expense — and to you when iTax starts matching income to invoices. The POS you buy in 2026 should have a real path to eTIMS, not a promise to “look at tax later”.

Who eTIMS is for

KRA’s public FAQs state that persons engaged in business should onboard eTIMS and issue electronic tax invoices. That includes VAT-registered traders and many who are not on VAT — for example suppliers of exempt services who still run a business. From 1 January 2024, claiming a business expense generally requires an electronic tax invoice, with listed exemptions such as PAYE emoluments and certain imports. Small sellers under the turnover threshold may see buyer-initiated invoicing; that does not mean a growing duka can ignore fiscal invoices forever.

OSCU, VSCU and why “eTIMS certified POS” is a muddy phrase

KRA offers several ways to invoice: web portals, eCitizen buyer-initiated invoices, and system-to-system control units. OSCU (Online Sales Control Unit) signs invoices by talking to the online eTIMS environment. VSCU (Virtual Sales Control Unit) is the other integration shape, often discussed for bulk or high-volume ERPs. A phone stand is not an OSCU. A licensed integrator is. DigiTax (Namiri Technologies) is licensed as an eTIMS OSCU integrator. Zeni POS uses that layer so your counter software does not pretend to be KRA.

What a real eTIMS invoice contains

Expect a QR or verification URL, a tax breakdown by rate, and metadata: invoice number, date and time, signature and internal data. Credit notes reverse a signed sale. Re-typing the day’s M-Pesa totals into a portal after close is how numbers diverge from stock and from KRA.

How Zeni POS supports this

Zeni POS is the shop system. DigiTax is the fiscal path. Together they mean you are not hopping platforms: ring the sale, take M-Pesa, deduct stock, and fiscalize through DigiTax. Onboarding still needs your PIN, KRA’s service request, and a LIVE DigiTax business — we run that checklist on the demo. Read the eTIMS landing page for the till-level walkthrough, then ask for a written KES quote that states tax setup explicitly.
